Umekita Park's Urban Forest Opens on November 20 as Osaka's Grand Green Osaka Enters Its Final Phase
Umekita MMO announced on October 27, 2026 that the roughly 8,400-square-meter Umekita Forest in Umekita Park, north of JR Osaka Station, opens on November 20, together with the full 350-meter Hirameki Path. The whole park opens in spring 2027 and the entire district is scheduled to complete in March 2028. What it means for buyers around Umeda.
The short version: the large park north of Umeda is in its finishing phase, and the urban forest opens first on November 20
Umekita MMO, the area-management organization for Grand Green Osaka, announced on October 27, 2026 that the roughly 8,400-square-meter Umekita Forest in the North Park of Umekita Park, just north of JR Osaka Station, will open at 12:00 on November 20, 2026, and that the 350-meter Hirameki Path, the elevated walkway linking the north and south blocks, will open along its full length the same day[1]. The remaining roughly 2,200 square meters of the park are scheduled to open with the full park opening in spring 2027, and both the completion of the south residential tower and the formal completion of the whole district are scheduled for March 2028[1].
The conclusion first: this is not a new project, but the last large redevelopment site in Umeda entering its final stage. The park covers about 45,000 square meters. It is being built by Osaka City and the Urban Renaissance Agency as a disaster-prevention park project, with the developer joint venture providing design upgrades, and it will be handed over to Osaka City once complete[2]. For anyone considering a purchase around Umeda, what matters is not the opening ceremony itself but three things that will happen in sequence over the next year and a half: the park is finished, the residential towers are handed over, and the flow of people settles into a pattern.
What opens this time
According to the material the developer joint venture released on April 23 this year, Umekita Forest sits on the west side of the North Park and is planned as a quiet, nature-led area in contrast to the urban South Park with its lawn and event spaces. It includes about 1,400 square meters of water features, including a waterfall about 10 meters wide with a drop of about 3 meters and a pond, 165 tall trees of 22 species, among them 23 cherry trees of 6 varieties, and about 2,600 square meters of lawn[2]. Based on ecological surveys of the Yodo River and Osaka Castle Park, the park has set a target of attracting 56 species of birds and insects, of which 30 had already been observed at the time of the release[2].
A new Italian restaurant operated by Balnibarbi will also open in the park, with views over the forest[1].
The Osaka Prefecture release highlights another function. The park is a designated wide-area evacuation site, and this expansion raises the usable evacuation space from about 3.0 hectares to about 3.7 hectares, reaching about 3.9 hectares when the whole park opens[3]. For people living in high-rise condominiums around Umeda, having a large open evacuation area within walking distance is a practical safety benefit.
One detail is worth noting. The April plan called for opening about 0.9 hectares first, with the remaining roughly 1,400 square meters to follow in spring 2027, whereas the figures published on October 27 are about 8,400 square meters now and about 2,200 square meters later[2][1]. In other words, the area actually opening now is slightly smaller than the spring plan, with the difference deferred to next spring. This is a normal construction adjustment, but it shows that the real completion date for the park is the full opening in spring 2027.
Where the overall project stands
The timeline makes it clearer. According to Osaka City, the development policy for the Umekita Phase 2 area was set in March 2015, the private developer was selected in July 2018, private construction began in December 2020, the underground Umekita (Osaka) station opened in March 2023, the first part of the district opened in September 2024, basic infrastructure is to be completed by the end of fiscal 2026, the whole park opens around spring 2027, and the full district opening is scheduled for fiscal 2027[4].
On the developer side, the milestones are the first opening on September 6, 2024, the grand opening of the South Building on March 21, 2025, completion of the north residential tower on December 9, 2025, the opening of Umekita Forest on November 20, 2026, the full park opening around spring 2027, and the completion of the south residential tower together with the full district opening in March 2028[1]. By April this year, cumulative visitors to the areas already open had reached about 28 million, and according to the developers, about 90 percent of Grand Green Osaka will be in operation once Umekita Forest opens[2].
Put differently, between 2024 and 2028 the people, retail and residential functions on this site are being layered in stages, and we are now at the point where the park is almost finished while housing is still being delivered[1].
Nearby land prices: Kita-ku commercial land up 15.6%, and the Grand Front site is already the second most expensive in the prefecture
The prefectural land price survey published by Osaka Prefecture in September 2026 shows residential land in Osaka's Kita-ku up 7.3% year on year and commercial land up 15.6%[5]. The commercial benchmark site at Ofuka-cho, where the Grand Front Osaka South Building stands, is valued at ¥24.9 million per square meter, the second highest commercial site in the prefecture, yet it rose only 1.6%. By contrast, the site at Oyodo-minami 1-chome, on the west side of the park near Shin-Umeda City, rose 21.8%, the largest increase of any commercial site in the prefecture[5].
These figures tell us two things. First, land prices in the core area in front of Umeda Station are already among the highest in Japan, and most of the expectations from the redevelopment are already priced in, which is why the increase there is small. Second, the larger increases are in the ring just outside the core: Oyodo to the west of the park, Nakatsu to the north, and Nakazaki-cho, Tenma and Honjo to the east. These areas used to be separated from central Umeda by the freight yard and railway lines. Now the park and the walkway connect them, and the sense of walking distance is changing.
What this means for buyers
First, the value for residents is real. A 4.5-hectare park with water features and an evacuation function is a facility that families within walking distance will use every day, which is a different kind of change from the opening of an office building or a hotel[4]. When viewing resale condominiums in Kita-ku, it is worth actually walking the route from the unit to the North Park to check whether it really is a comfortable walking distance.
Second, new high-priced supply will influence resale pricing nearby. The south residential tower is scheduled for completion in March 2028, and together with the already completed north tower, this area will have a cluster of expensive new condominiums[1]. New buildings like these tend to become the reference point for sellers of nearby resale units, the anchoring effect we described in our earlier analysis of asking prices in central Osaka.
Third, do not treat the park opening as a reason prices will keep rising. Land price growth in the Umeda core has already slowed, and asking prices for resale condominiums in Osaka's six central wards have been falling in recent months. Interest rates, new supply and the behavior of overseas buyers all remain uncertain. The park is a plus for quality of life, not a guarantee of price.
Fourth, keep the remaining construction in mind. The whole park does not open until spring 2027, and the south tower and full district opening are scheduled for March 2028, so construction continues until then[1]. When viewing, ask the agent about the position of the unit relative to the construction zone and the effect on views and noise.
Summary
On November 20, 2026, the roughly 8,400-square-meter Umekita Forest in Umekita Park opens ahead of schedule and the 350-meter Hirameki Path opens along its full length. The whole park opens around spring 2027, and the entire Grand Green Osaka district is scheduled to be complete in March 2028[1]. The last large redevelopment site north of Umeda is turning from a construction site into a neighborhood, and land and housing prices nearby have already absorbed most of the expectations. Over the next year and a half, the changes will show up more in the living environment and in new supply than in prices.
